* We Saved Obasanjo From Being Removed as President, Says🗣 Gowon*

A former Head of State and elder statesman, Gen Yakubu Gowon (retd.), said on Saturday that he and another former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), were among key figures who convinced the National Assembly against impeaching former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007.  Gowon stated that Obasanjo was able to complete his tenure as President because of the key roles he and others played by speaking to the then Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abbah and the Senate President, Pius Anyim, to let peace reign, adding that their action was borne out of the need to preserve the seat of the President.  Gowon said these at the Maj Gen Emmanuel Abisoye Foundation lecture, at the University of Abuja, tagged, “Nation Building or Nation Fragmentation: Reflections on 20 Years of Post-Military Rule in Nigeria”, a foundation where he serves as the Chairman, Board of Trustees.  The former Head of State said his action was informed by the need to save Obasanjo’s successors from recurring embarrassments by the legislature.  According to Gowon, if the action of the legislature to impeach Obasanjo was allowed to be implemented, those who succeeded him would have faced a similar fate.
